[1/6] Members of the military walk on the street in the aftermath of a deadly earthquake in Antakya, Turkey February 16, 2023. The number of people killed by the deadliest earthquake in Turkey's modern history has risen to 36,187, authorities said. While several people were also found alive in Turkey on Wednesday, reports of such rescues have become increasingly infrequent. Authorities in Turkey and Syria have not announced how many people are still missing. Millions of people are in need of humanitarian aid after being left homeless in near-freezing winter temperatures.
The quake killed at least 36,187 in southern Turkey, while authorities in neighbouring Syria have reported 5,800 deaths - a figure that has changed little in days. While several people were found alive in Turkey on Wednesday, the number of rescues has dwindled significantly. Neither Turkey nor Syria have said how many people are still missing. More than 4,000 fatalities have been reported in the rebel-held northwest, but rescuers say nobody has been found alive there since Feb. 9. Deliveries from Turkey were severed completely in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, when a route used by the United Nations was temporarily blocked.
BAB AL-HAWA, Syria—Three-month-old Mohammed Ghiath Rajab, who suffered a serious head injury during last Monday’s earthquakes, lay unconscious in an incubator in an overflowing ICU. He was breathing with the help of a mechanical ventilator, a surgical drainage tube protruding from his skull. Around him, in a hospital run by an American nonprofit, dozens of other children, bloodied and bandaged, were being treated over the weekend, part of a flood of casualties from the devastating double quakes that struck the border region between Turkey and Syria.
GENEVA, Feb 10 (Reuters) - The World Food Programme (WFP) is running out of stocks in northwest Syria and called to open more border crossings from Turkey after both countries were ravaged by earthquakes, the U.N. food aid organisation said on Friday. "Northwest Syria, where 90% of the population depends on humanitarian assistance, is a big concern. The border crossing is open now, but we need to get new border crossings open." Currently, there is only one open crossing, at Bab al-Hawa, between Turkey and the opposition-held northwest Syria. Fleischer stressed that opening a second border crossing was essential to getting aid to northwest Syria.

The U.S. Agency for International Development will provide $85 million in urgent humanitarian assistance to Turkey and Syria. SYRIA OVERWHELMEDIn Syria, relief efforts are complicated by a conflict that has partitioned the country and wrecked its infrastructure. The Syrian government views the delivery of aid to rebel-held areas from Turkey as a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Aid began trickling into northwest Syria on Thursday, four days after deadly earthquakes battered an area that has been politically isolated by war, and left millions of displaced people and other Syrians living under continued hostilities without assistance. Six United Nations trucks crossed the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, which connects Turkey to the far northwestern corner of Syria. Before Thursday, the road to the crossing had been damaged by Monday’s earthquakes. The trucks carried shelter items and nonfood supplies, according to the U.N.’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA.
[1/2] Rescuers search for survivors at the site of a collapsed building, in the aftermath of an earthquake, in Latakia, Syria February 9, 2023. REUTERS/Yamam al Shaar/File PhotoFeb 9 (Reuters) - The first convoy of humanitarian assistance for people in northwest Syria since Monday's devastating earthquake is en route to the southern Turkish border with the hope of crossing on Thursday, two aid sources told Reuters. A Turkish official said the Bab al-Hawa border crossing was open for humanitarian aid and authorities will open a few more crossings after two days if security is sound. The United Nations has described access to the opposition-controlled area of Syria through Bab al-Hawa as a "lifeline" for some 4 million people who it says rely on humanitarian assistance. U.N. aid from Turkey served 2.7 million people in northwest Syria per month last year compared with 43,500 people a month who received aid from routes within Syria since August 2021.

With the help of refugee hospital workers, he built a makeshift photo studio using hospital bed sheets and other materials available. Photographer Pieter ten Hoopen Pieter ten HoopenThe studio quickly became a sensation. The photos span several generations – some of the subjects were born at the refugee camp, some have been there for decades. It was a haven from the hustling and bustling of the camp hospital. Ten Hoopen used tilt-shift lenses, which are normally used with the large-format cameras used in classic photography.
